Please prepare 32 bars of a song (preferably a show tune) that shows their range; no a cappella pieces. Auditioners should wear dance shoes or other shoes and clothing suitable for dancing.  Initial auditions will just be singing and dancing; callbacks will consist of cold reads from the script.

 

We are looking for people who can act or sing or dance, or any combination thereof.

Synopsis

Fiddler on the Roof" tells the story of Tevye, a poor Jewish milkman with five daughters and his Jewish neighbors in the Russian village of Anatevka in 1905.

​

Characters:
 

  • Tevye, a poor milkman with five daughters. A firm supporter of the traditions of his faith, he finds many of his convictions tested by the actions of his three oldest daughters. Age Range 40-60; Vocal Range Temor/Baritone

  • Golde, Tevye's sharp-tongued wife.  Age Range 40-60; vocal range Mezzo/Alto

  • Tzeitel, their oldest daughter, about nineteen. She loves her childhood friend Motel and marries him, even though he's poor, begging her father not to force her to marry Lazar Wolf. Age Range 18-25; Vocal Range Soprano/Alto

  • Hodel, their daughter, about seventeen. Intelligent and spirited, she falls in love with Perchik and later joins him in Siberia.  Age Range 18-25; Vocal Range Soprano

  • Chava, their daughter, about fifteen. A shy and bookish girl, who falls in love with Fyedka. Age Range 16-21; Vocal Range Soprano/Alto

  • Shprintze, their daughter, about 12.  Age range 8-14; Vocal Range Soprano/Alto

  • Bielke, their youngest daughter, about 9.  Age range 8-10; Vocal Range Soprano/Alto

  • Motel Kamzoil, a poor but hardworking tailor who loves, and later marries, Tzeitel. Age Range 18-30; Vocal Range Tenor

  • Perchik, a student revolutionary who comes to Anatevka and falls in love with Hodel. He leaves for Kyiv, is arrested and exiled to Siberia. Age Range 20-35; Vocal Range Tenor

  • Fyedka, a young Christian. He shares Chava's passion for reading and is outraged by the Russians' treatment of the Jews. Age Range 20-30; no singing required but may sing if the actor cast in this role is a strong singer.

  • Lazar Wolf, the wealthy village butcher. Widower of Fruma-Sarah. Attempts to arrange a marriage for himself to Tzeitel. Age Range 40-60; Vocal Range Baritone

  • Yente, the gossipy village matchmaker who matches Tzeitel and Lazar. Age Range 45-60; Vocal Range Soprano/Alto

  • Grandma Tzeitel, Golde's dead grandmother, who rises from the grave in Tevye's "nightmare". Age Range 60-75; Vocal Range Mezzo/Alto

  • Fruma-Sarah, Lazar Wolf's dead wife, who also rises from the grave in the "nightmare". 20-50; Vocal Range Mezzo/Alto

  • Rabbi, the wise village leader. Age Range 50-70; will sing as part of the ensemble

  • Constable, the head of the local Russian police, a Christian. Age Range 30-60; Non-singing

  • There are also several smaller speaking roles who will be part of a large ensemble portraying other residents of Anatevka.  Singers and dancers needed for the ensemble.​
